A Transformers Card Game?

I am unsure how this flew beneath my radar, but Wizards of the Coast appears to be cooking up a new trading card game for the Transformers franchise for Fall 2018. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of information out there just yet, but here is my take based on an interview with company president Chris Cocks and Rolling Stone Magazine's Glixel.

In an attempt to “shake loose from some of the trepidation that comes with successes and continue to chase risky ventures”, Cocks is invested in creating new games while sustaining their flagship properties (i.e. D&D and MTG). Although it has not been formally announced, Transformers TCG will target both the young teens and the toy audience.

From what was revealed in the interview, Transformers TCG’s cards will be two sided, oversized, and feel “bigger, weightier in your hand” with a light learning curve, but a lot of depth. The game will revolve around two deck sets, one being a hero deck and the other a supplemental deck with skills and abilities to boost the heroes. The two decks will need to synergize and provide the proper support to complement the hero deck being played. Depending on how the property is received, there is also consideration for a digital version of the game.

Based on these hints alone, I can imagine that the Transform mechanic will likely resemble that of MTG where a certain trigger will allow the hero card to flip and gain varying skills and abilities. The two deck format was utilized previously with Legend of the Five Rings and can offer a unique twist in the deck building strategy. While L5R’s supplemental deck focused primarily on the clan aesthetic and world settings, it sounds like Transformers TCG will be more focused on individual heroes and villains from the greater franchise. Although WOTC have explored new TCG/CCGs in the past with some being more successful than others, we are quite intrigued by the prospect of Wizards partnering with a major multimedia IP like Transformers. We’ll continue to dig up any news pertaining to this exciting new game and provide you with details as soon as they become available. Let us know whichTransformers heroes and villains you’d be interested in building a deck around in the comments below!
